Mr. duPont’s prominent career began at age 22 when the voters of Delaware’s 14th district elected him to the State Legislature. During his first term in the state house, he was chairman of the Natural Resources Committee. Looking to further broaden his horizons, he left politics in 1974, to enter the world of commerce as an executive with the National Division of the Wilmington Trust Company. Two years later, he moved to Tampa, Florida, and joined Budget Rent-A-Car as Vice President-General Manager of the Tampa location.
For the next eight years, Mr. duPont managed a 24 hour, seven day a week operation that exceeded 60 employees, 800 automobiles and served as Tampa’s airport franchise. He also administered training and oversight for 15 sublease locations. By 1983, Mr. duPont had become a minority shareholder of Budget’s Florida franchises. That year, the ownership group decided to sell.
Immediately upon the sale of the Budget Group, Mr. duPont formed First Tampa Capital Corporation (FTCC), a diverse paid-in-fund, SBIC licensed investment company. Shareholders were comprised of Tampa’s leading businessmen and quickly the $2.3 million fund began investing in various ventures.
Because FTCC was always in the market for new and creative business concepts, Steve Chapman approached Tom duPont with the idea of starting a new magazine. In 1984, Mr. duPont and Mr. Chapman formed duPont Publishing, Inc. with the prospect of producing a full-color, monthly, marketplace magazine featuring classic, luxury and exotic cars for sale. Shortly after the launch of the first duPont REGISTRY, FTCC liquidated its assets and Mr. duPont turned to full-time management of the fledgling publishing company.
